Trieste is a historic port city on the Adriatic coast, known for its multicultural heritage and dramatic cliffside setting. The urban landscape blends Austro-Hungarian architecture with Italian modernism, centered around the expansive Piazza Unità d'Italia. The city serves as a major gateway to the Julian Alps and the Istrian peninsula. Its character is defined by a mix of maritime activity, literary tradition, and a relaxed pace of life. Visitors often explore the old town's narrow streets, enjoy local coffee culture, and take advantage of the nearby natural beauty. The atmosphere is generally calm and welcoming, reflecting its unique position at the crossroads of Central Europe and the Mediterranean.
One of the largest squares in Europe, it overlooks the Adriatic Sea and features the Basilica of San Giusto and the Doge's Palace. It serves as the main civic and social hub of the city.

The Roman theatre lies at the foot of the San Giusto hill, facing the sea. The construction partially exploits the gentle slope of the hill, and much of the theatre is made of stone. The statues which adorned the theatre, brought to light in the 1930s, are now preserved in the town museum. The theatre was erected during the second half of the 1st century. This amphitheatre held tragedies, comedies, and gladiator fights. It was hidden for quite some time and was excavated in 1937–1938.
